TOUGH GAMING! ASUS TUF RTX3090 UNBOX & REVIEW

After the review of the ASUS TUF RTX3090, we also received the insanely powerful new ASUS TUF Gaming series RTX3090. This is the most anticipated 30 series graphics card released by Nvidia and who can blame the hype, with 24GB of RAM, it boasts some interesting specs. The TUF RTX3090 continues the same design philosophy with an AXIAL-TECH three-fan upgrade, it has the same shape and look of the TUF RTX3080, 6 heat pipe MAX CONTACT cooling solution, occupying 2.7 slots.

ASUS TUF RTX3090 uses Ampere-based GA102 GPU with 10496 Cuda cores, PCIe Gen4 interface with 24G 384-bit GDDR6X memory. Maximum resolution is 8k (7680*4320). NVlink allows 4 card total linked together at the same time (but who needs 96GB of discrete memory).

The whole card uses premium materials, equipped with the latest Axial-tech axial fans. It features a long fan blade and an annular seal to reduce the size of the fan hub, which can enhance the speed and improve the cooling effect under extremely silent operation.

Overclock test
Under our overclocking capability test, we found out this card cannot be overclocked too much due to its high power consumption, but we still tried to boost a little bit frequency to push the performance
Under Asus GPU tweak II, we successfully boost the core frequency around 150Mhz and memory frequency 500Mhz. Finally, we got around 5% improvement without modifying the Vbios or shorting the capacitor. The maximum power of this TUF 3090 is around 550W.

Under Furmark 4K pressure test, the TUF RTX3090 is running normally
The maximum temperature is around 71℃

Under 3DMARK Benchmark test, the TUF RTX3090 is running normally
The maximum temperature is around 62℃

Under Unigine 8K benchmark test, the TUF RTX3090 is running normally
The maximum temperature is around 64℃

The temperature control of this card is extremely good, not only for some high-pressure benchmarks but also under overclocking settings. We can’t stop imagining how good the temperature control of the upcoming ROG Strix series cards will be or the hi-end water cooling card series such as the Poseidon or Matrix.

Overall

After testing, The Nvidia RTX 3090 is worthy of being the strongest graphics card in the consumer category. Air-cooled heat dissipation can already be so efficient. Also, Samsung is providing their 8nm process, compared with the previous 20th generation of 12nm process, the heat dissipation of the GPU has been greatly improved. EPIC PC speculates here that the ROG series should be greatly enhanced, whether the level-up of core frequency or the amount of video memory because the new ‘Big Navi’ graphics card built by the Nvidia’s main competitor, AMD based on their new RDNA2 architecture GPU will use the latest 7nm process and will have two models of 12GB and 16GB VRAM capacity. In addition, Big Navi will not use HDB2 or HBM2e video memory, but the cheaper GDRR6 VRAM chip, which will effectively reduce costs. In terms of price, Nvidia hasn’t created more pressure on end users this time due to AMD’s new card is nearly released. And according to Nvidia’s consistent performance, the enhanced version of ‘Super’ cards should not be released so early. Instead, Nvidia may launch them after a round of price war with AMD, then start the Tug of war. In Australia, the price of TUF RTX3090 is estimated to be about AU$200-300 more than the official Nvidia’s Reference version. Compared with the previous generation of 2080Ti, the RTX3090 with such a big performance and heat dissipation improvement, the price has not changed much, which means the price/performance ratio is quite good.

We are very lucky to get the ASUS new TUF Gaming series RTX3080 10G. This is the 3080 10G version of the three latest 30 series graphics cards released by Nvidia. TUF 3080 continues the non-Reference design with an AXIAL-TECH three-fan upgrades, 6 heat pipe MAX CONTACT cooling solution, occupying 2.7 slots.

ASUS TUF RTX3080 uses Ampere-based GA102 GPU. The 8nm Samsung process makes the die size only 628mm2 but integrates 28.3 billion transistors. It is equipped with GDDR6X high-speed video memory, PCIe Gen4 channels and HDMI 2.1 interface that supports 8k 60hz gaming performance.

Because the card we received is a bit late, we will prepare a more detailed benchmark later. In general, the 30 series graphics card is very worth looking forward to, both in terms of performance and price. ASUS has released their flagship ROG Strix RTX 2080 Ti gaming video cards into the Australia market. With NVIDIA’s latest Turing architecture, the three cards support GDDR6 memory and VirtualLink specifications. In addition, ASUS has added four exclusive functions: dustproof (IP5X international dustproof rating), noise prevention, heat protection, and hardware protection, which can greatly improve the operational stability and durability of the card.

The main body of the video card
The whole card utilises premium materials, equipped with the latest Axial-tech fans. It features a long fan blade and an annular seal to reduce the size of the fan hub, which enhances the speed and improves the cooling, while drastically reducing the noise it produces. At the same time, in order to improve the quality of the ROG Strix series, the PCBs of this model are built completely by machine, a process ASUS has dubbed ‘Auto-Extreme’, which finishes all the through-holes and surface soldering at one time. This reduces the thermal strain and improves the stability of the graphics card.

An inner metal stand holder has been implemented on the video card to ensure the card will never bend. This is an issue we have witnessed in many previous generations

The 19-phased superalloy power supply will demand more than 500Ws of input power. The unique dual BIOS switch allows players to choose between silent mode and performance. Even in performance mode, the noise is only 5dB higher than the ambient noise.

In the silent mode, with furmark burn test running for a long period of time, the fan speed only runs around 30%, the noise is almost inaudible, and the heat consumption is better than most aftermarket RTX 2080 Tis

Although the ROG Strix RTX 2080 Ti is top-notch, the frequency might not be enough for some gamers or OCers. The base frequency is the same as the Nvidia version at 1350MHz, and the Boost frequency is only 1650MHz, which is only 15MHz higher. Despite this, thanks to the powerful cooling system and the conservative VBIOS settings, the ROG Strix RTX 2080 Ti runs 20°C lower than the nVidia version when running AAA games, making it possible to run at high frequencies for a long time, which increases the performance by 3%.

Under our overclocking capability test, most of the graphics cards we tested have a maximum frequency of 2040MHz in the 3DMark valid score test, while the ROG Strix RTX 2080 Ti has reached a frequency of 2130MHz.

Unfortunately, 2130MHz will cause the program to crash sometimes, to keep the testing software running smoothly, we dropped the frequency to 2100MHz and passed 3DMARK Time Spy and Time Spy Extreme.

However, we are not satisfied with this score. After some minor adjustments, we decided to keep the frequency at 2115MHz.

The Unigine benchmark

Overall
ASUS is the last manufacturer to launch their flagship Strix 2080TI. In appearance, it adheres to the STRIX series’ consistent style, without a fancy RGB front-end and complicated lighting effects. ASUS has opted to focus on solid quality design and luxurious materials to make the graphics card far superior to other brands in overclocking and stability. This is in tandem with additional features to the RTX 20 series cards, such as dual BIOS, onboard RGB switch and other user-friendly improvements. In terms of the price, ASUS is about 13% more expensive than other brands, but for its performance and materials, as well as overclocking and stability, it is not that expensive. This card will become a milestone for ASUS.

ASUS has released the latest Dual series RTX2080 O8G graphics card. Featuring the latest Ray Tracing technology and more powerful Tensor core performance than the previous generation cards, we are expecting a lot of performance improvements. This review will cover the unboxing of the RTX 2080, as well as some benchmarks.

According to ASUS official website, this card contains the Max-Contact technology and uses 2.7 PCI-E slot width, 8GB 256bit GDDR6 with 2944 Cuda core and the 2 x patented Wing-blade fan with the Vapor-Chamber heatsink. It’s clear that ASUS has opted to put a lot of focus on keeping the GPU cool and under control.

After the test, the overall performance of this Asus RTX 2080 Dual O8G the verdict is simple: a little bit better than the GTX 1080 Ti with Ray Tracing and DLSS. As the price in Australia is around $1479, the CP value may not be good enough to encourage true gamers to dig into their wallet, we expect a lot of people to wait for the Asus Strix series gaming cards.

Overall, Ray Tracing has become the future of PC games, the lastest 3A games will implement this technology as a standard function. RTX series card will help us to enable the realistic world of new games and VR/AR experiences. With GDDR6, Tensor core and DLSS technology, we will actually feel the light and shadow. Plus, Nvidia will brings their NVLINK, AI package and Boost v4 later to enhance the new graphics card, not only the 2080 or 2080Ti but also the latest Titan.
